YALE MFG CO combination Lock RARE ALPHA NUMERIC Dial 1880s McNeale Urban Diebold

Up for SALE is a unique safe combination lock made by YALE MANUFACTURING COMPANY of STAMFORD CONNECTICUT.

Many Patent dates on the dial start from July 25^th 1871 to Nov 2^nd 1880.

I’m not sure what safe manufacture used this safe lock but I’ve only seen 2 in 25 years. What makes it rare is the combination dial is DUAL ALPHA-NUMERIC. I believe the only other safe company back in the 1880s that used a total alphabet combination dial was McNeale and Urban.
 

YALE…must have been trying to compete with the Alphabet dial since most people can pick out a 5 letter word and remember the word combination instead of a 5 number combination. What’s nice about this style of lock is the combination is VERY easy to change.
 

The wheels are numbered in order of 1-4.. the 5^th number is always the same since it’s the driver. A/0.   The serrated ring on each wheel can be removed and index mark rotated to the LETTER or NUMBER of choice. Then press fit the geared wheel back in place.
 

Combination works great but the lock needs to be set up on a display where the dial ring is set in place so you can index the Letter or Number of the combination consistently….

As you can see the long pipe attached to the wheel pack housing to the dial assembly is about 6.25 inches so the safe door this lock went on was fairly thick. The dial spindle is inside the threaded pipe.  

Nice overall shape.
